Let me cut right to the chase folks...
For all you women/girls out there...just to let you know:
In regards to the new abortion laws in Spain (which legalize abortion), the Archbishop of Granada (Spain) has publically stated in his last Sunday Sermon that women who have an abortion can thus be "legally" (at least when it comes to the Canonic Law it seems) abused (raped) by men...On top of this, he compared the new laws to the laws installed by the Nazis.
This is so utterly outrageous that I'm at loss for words...
Abortion isn't pretty and I know women who have had an abortion and I can tell you that it is a decision that you don't take lightly...but regardless of how I would decide given the circumstances, I am 1000 % pro choice...
Yes, 1000%!
I find it outrageous beyond words that some males still believe that a woman deserves to be raped for whatever behavior she displays (short skirts, sexy lipstick, raunchy dancing style...).
NO ONE - woman or man - deserves to be abused (whether the abuse is physical or emotional).
And I also fondly believe that every human being has the right to decide in regards to his/her health, well-being and - at the end of the day - his/her body.
This simply is a disgrace and this archbishop ought to be suspended.
Crimes against women are not petty offences, but criminal acts...in every sense of the word!

Here comes a translation from what the Spanish FB group had to say:
**The Archbishop of Granada, Mr Javier Martínez, in a sermon held recently compared the new Spanish Abortion law, which has just been passed in Parliament with the votes of the majority, to Hitler’s crimes and added that if a woman has a termination, men are entitled to abuse her.
Yesterday afternoon, some concerned citizens decided to create a Facebook group called “Que la justicia actúe contra el Archbishop of Granada” (We want legal action to be taken against the Archbishop of Granada). We believe that the Archbishop’s words could be against the Spanish law, as they are encouraging and endorsing gender violence. Keep in mind that not long time ago the Imam of Fuengirola was sentenced to prison for 15 monts for holding similar views.
The group features a collection of articles published by the Spanish press and the transcription of the sermon, as published by the Archdiocese of Granada’s official website, that can be downloaded in pdf format at http://www.facebook.com/l/e3d45;diocesisgranada.files.wordpress.com/2009/12/homiliacatedral20diciembre20092.pdf
In less than 24 hours, nearly 3000 people had joined the group, where all members are expressing their views freely and openly.
This morning some of our members have taken individual action sending letters to the Spanish Ministry of Equality, civil associations, political parties, the epicospal conference, etc urging them to state their position about these declarations, and asking for the intervention of the Government’s attorney office in case they are incurring in a crime.
Gender violence is a social disgrace that in our country produces more casualties than terrorism. We can’t tolerate anyone to contribute to its propagation and justification with their declarations, especially when this is done from a public stand or from a pulpit.
We understand laws must be equal for everybody, no matter their religious beliefs -Catholics, Muslims, agnostics, atheists, etc- and/or whether they choose to hide behind a balaclava, a cassock or an institutional office.
If the public authorities remain silent in these situations, the citizens must have their say, expressing their disgust and taking action by denouncing them, to prevent the degradation of our laws by the carelessness of those who should safeguard their enforcement.**
I wish I could say this is shocking but sadly nothing religious extremists do shocks me anymore. They've been tampering in our political process here to the point where it doesn't work anymore. I'm encouraged to see people getting angry enough to take action against this bishop. I get frustrated when people don't get how our rights as women can't be taken for granted. There is an army (and they call themselves soldiers - my sister is one) and many of them are WOMEN who are completely committed to doing away with our reproductive rights, not to mention the rights of same sex couples and any other person or group who opposes their agenda. Many people don't understand the danger and how quickly things can change.
It's a fucking shame!!!
Emma has asked me to write a guest blog about this on her blog...and I so fucking WILL!!! This cannot get unnoticed!!!
You're so right, Kai, these things MUST be adressed, 'cos if we don't adress them, we lose our freedom faster than we can imagine.
*Religious extremism*...you name it! 'Cos that's what it is...
PS:The archbishop now claims that he was being misunderstood (don't they always do that???).
